An accomplished singer, songwriter and musician, Abraham Afeworki passed away
Posted: 2006-10-10 00:00:00 Asmarino
Our beloved Eritrea, which has grown a habit of taking our young, has taken yet another one: Abraham Afewerki, perhaps the greatest artist of his generation.
The details are still sketchy, but there is now devastating news that on Saturday, October 7th, Abraham Afewerki died in Massawa, Eritrea.
An accomplished singer, songwriter and musician, Abraham had been practicing his craft since he way a little boy with a harmonica. When he was 12 years old, he joined the Red Flowers cultural troupe for youth in Khartoum, Sudan and wrote the lyrics and melodies for his songs in 1979. He produced his first cassette in 1991 and has not stopped writing, singing and performing since then.
His 1994 release, “Tesfay iyu sinqey” (hope is my diet), is what propelled him to a household name. Over the years, his melodic tunes, inspiring lyrics, energetic performance, and skilled krar and guitar playing ensured that he remained one of the most consistently reliable Eritrean artists admired not just by his fans but by musicians, probably the highest honor an artist can expect.
Fittingly, his newest CD, Semay, released only a few months ago, showcased his talent for melodic songs and inspiring lyrics.
Eritrea has lost a great son but he will always be remembered by his fans for elevating Eritrean music...
